Theme: Reconstructing and Developing the Somali Nation

The Somali Studies International Association (SSIA) invites academic researchers, scholars, and experts to submit abstracts for the 15th SSIA Congress. This landmark event will be held in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, for the first time since 1989, symbolizing a renewed commitment to revitalizing academic and intellectual engagement within the country. Hosted by the Somali National University, the congress represents a significant milestone in Somali studies, emphasizing resilience and progress within the Somali academic community.
Congress Theme and Objectives:
The theme of this year’s congress, “Reconstructing and Developing the Somali Nation,” addresses the multifaceted challenges and opportunities that Somalia faces in its pursuit of sustainable development and national reconstruction. This theme encourages a critical examination of Somalia’s current needs and offers insights and strategies vital for its long-term stability and growth. We invite submissions in Somali, Arabic or English that align with the congress’s main theme and its various sub-thematic areas:
- State Building and Good Governance: Analysing strategies for effective state-building, governance, and enhancing the capacity of Somali institutions.
- Culture and Language: Exploring the role of Somali culture, language, and literature in strengthening national identity and unity.
- Security and Geopolitics: Examining geopolitical and security issues impacting Somalia and their implications for national reconstruction.
- Education and Human Capital Development: Discussing the importance of education and human capital in supporting sustainable development and nation-building efforts.
- “Innovation for a Sustainable Future: Science and Technology Development in Somalia”
- Religion and Peacebuilding: Highlighting the role of normative Islamic teachings of peace, tolerance, and compassion in countering violent extremism and fostering social cohesion.
Expected Outcomes:
The 15th SSIA Congress aims to:
- Produce a comprehensive publication of congress proceedings.
- Develop actionable recommendations for engaging the Somali diaspora in nation-building activities.
- Promote Somali culture, language, and literature.
- Advance strategies for peace, reconciliation, and conflict resolution.
Submission Guidelines:
We invite participants to submit abstracts that align with the congress’s sub-themes. Please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Length: Abstracts should not exceed 300 words.
- Content: Provide a clear outline of the research objectives, methodology, and expected findings or insights.
- Format: Include the title of the paper, author(s), and their affiliation(s).
- Deadline: Abstracts must be submitted by September 22, 2024.
