The Somali Studies International Association (SSIA) serves as a crucial platform for scholars and enthusiasts to delve into the rich tapestry of Somali culture, history, and society. Its flagship event, the Somali Studies International Congress, holds a significant place in fostering academic dialogue and understanding of the region. Here’s a glimpse into its fascinating history:
1978: Genesis in Chicago: the SSIA was officially established in Chicago following a panel discussion on Somali topics at the African Studies Association meeting. Its primary mission is to ignite and advance knowledge about Somalia and its Horn of Africa neighbour’s.
1980: Inaugural Congress in Mogadishu: The historic first congress took place in Mogadishu, Somalia, showcasing the association’s commitment to engaging with scholars within the country. Despite logistical challenges, the event highlighted the need for further research and exploration of diverse aspects of Somali life.
Subsequent Congresses: Since its inception, the SSIA has organized fourteen international congresses, each held in different countries at roughly three-year intervals. These congresses have served as vibrant forums for academics, researchers, and students to present their findings on various themes, ranging from linguistics and anthropology to literature and environmental studies. The congresses have been held in Hamburg (1983), Rome (1986), Mogadishu (1989), Worcester and Boston (1993), Berlin (1996), Turku (1998), and Toronto (1999), Hargeisa (2001), Aarhus (2004), Columbus, Ohio & Djibouti (2007), Norway (2012), Helsinki (2015), Hargeisa (2018), 14th Congress to be hosted as a joint congress by Jigjiga University and Guthenburg University in 2021. However, Jigjiga University organized the 14th Congress in 2021, and Guthenburg University also organized 14th Congress in 2023.
Regional Meetings: Alongside international congresses, the SSIA also facilitates smaller regional gatherings on three continents, fostering closer collaboration and knowledge exchange among specialists within specific areas.
The 15th SSIA 2024 Congress: The 15th SSIA conference will be held in Mogadishu in 2024, hosted by the Somali National University.
